We love stories. People love hearing stories. We live with stories we made up and hear constantly. Fact is there isn't much truth in stories. Most stories are told by our own experiences and perspectives. Our stories are our own; they belong to us individually. So the stories told by other people do not necessarily apply to us. In most cases, they mislead our self-judgement and let us astray.
Also, general stories we tell ourselves (based on what is deemed as normal and in reference to the past) are not necessarily correct. Stories are essentially what they literally mean, according to Oxford dictionary: "an account of imaginary or real people and events told for entertainment." They are all completely made up. We established our capabilities based on our stories from past experiences. Having said that, what you were yesterday does not predetermine who you are today or tomorrow.
Let me give you a perfect example of a flawed story: Time. One of the main excuses for not putting in the hard work or blame for not being able to achieve something is time. Trust me, I'm guilty of having told myself this story countless of time. However, this is the brutal and honest truth: we all HAVE time to do things we would rather do. Think about it.
Something else we associate with work is that it is a pain. We would gladly avoid work at all costs, because of the story we told ourselves- the story that work is hard and not fun. It was not until recently that I fully got to embrace the goodness of hard work. When you put meaning to all tasks you have to do, you find purpose and the joy of getting something done. You feel empowered and are able to write a new story.
Forget about all the stories in your head. Make new ones. Build new ones. It's all in your hands.
